Episode 190
Elizabeth and Andy discuss whether or not they are “middle-aged”, Elizabeth’s fear involving the elderly and how Elizabeth’s fitness secret is directly linked to Girl Scout cookies. Then they give their unqualified advice to listener questions about how to handle a boyfriend who has a co-dependent relationship with his mother, what to do about in laws who are loving and wonderful but are not taking care of themselves health-wise or financially, and lastly what to do about an awful situation involving someone keying the crap out of the writer inners car for no reason! Enjoy!

I am scared of old people as well, not getting old. I think it’s a totally valid fear! Some old people in nursing homes are just freaky.
Funny that you mentioned you had a thing for Harris Wittels. I saw this pic of him yesterday and for a second I thought that’s Andy: https://instagram.com/p/zU4FelrizF/?modal=true
This is in response to the listener with the keyed car: it could be that the car was key because of their pet being trapped in the car. Just a thought. Don’t do it.
That’s what I thought immediately! I think someone keyed the car b/c she had her dogs in there.
I don’t think the black car came back and stalked her but she should have written a note before going in to yoga. Who cares if she ended up locked out. It’s yoga, a space where you are supposed to connect with your higher self and others so I find it kind of ironic that she didn’t do the right thing. Coming out to dented car sucks but it always restores your faith in humanity when someone writes a note!
Hey, me here, asshole with keyed car and dogs inside. I feel that context is pretty important here and while you all may disagree with my girls being left in the car I don’t agree and that’s not going to change. We live on acreage about 45 minutes away from anything, so if I’m leaving for the day my dogs, who I adore as though they were my children come along. That means riding in the car (which they love), hiking, sitting for an hour here or there in their crates, going to the dog park, to friends etc. I live in the Pacific Northwest and the temperature outside was likely 45 F that day, not even close to a place where my girls would be uncomfortable. They usually nap and don’t even want to get out after. Should I see a dog left in a car on a warm day and no water I’d be the first to be upset. If the temp were much higher I would do differently. The one thing Elizabeth said that hit home was that they could be stolen, my god, my worst nightmare, so I’ll take that into consideration.
Coco, point taken, the fact that I was going to yoga, a sacred space, and that I did wrong by not writing the note is not lost on me. All you have is my word that I was honestly going to write a note when I came out. Not a good move, I know, but it’s the reality.
Thanks for the feedback, car’s fixed, moving on…
“B” I read the entire page of comments, and nowhere did I see anyone calling you an asshole except yourself. People are concerned for pets, there is no reason to get so defensive. Everyone is just speaking out of concern for pets, they had no context of where you were or what the temperatures are. Be glad that people care about dogs!
Here in Philadelphia a car was recently stolen with a dog inside. It took over a month, but the dog was finally found, and was close to death.

I know some dogs love the car and love going out and about with their owner, instead of staying home, but it’s worth taking the risk of them being stolen into consideration.
B - I am with you 100%. Unfortunately for her, Elizabeth sees through Los Angeles glasses. I also live in the Pacific Northwest and take my dogs (both rescues) everwhere! They would much prefer to hang around in the car in 55 degrees than stay at home. Especially when a run on the beach is always part of the trip…and yes, dogs are allowed on the beach and off leash here. Of course, I watch them like a hawk and go where I can see for miles so I can leash them up if I see any other dogs or children. We don’t have problems with stolen cars or dogs here and even if we did, my German Shepherd would never let someone open the door let alone take him. I have done this with all my dogs for over 40 years in many different cities around the country and have never had any kind of problem. They always have water and windows opened a couple of inches and if it happens to be sunny (not hot) I park in the shade or I don’t leave them. With average temperature in the 50’s-60’s and often cloudy, this is rarely an issue.
I have never commented before but I wanted to add my support to B and Windtrix. As long as you are very cognizant of the temperature, dogs love to be with their owners and I don’t see anything wrong with leaving them while you go to yoga. Where I live in rural Oregon, I feel much more sorry for those dogs I see on chains or in yards that never go anywhere and aren’t included as a member of the family. As a side note, I absolutely love all the totally podcasts and I am well in to middle age - Elizabeth and Andy, I don’t think you will be middle aged until you hit 40+, I think of you as quite young!
Hey guys, fun fact, it was indeed the Pope (the current Pope!) that said that he wants to baptize Martians.
Here’s the Huffington Post article about it
http://huff.to/1jEFu35
It’s refreshing that the pope is cray cray like everyone else!!! Actually we are Martians. We immigrated from Mars but are originally from a distant Galaxy. Not too long in the future startling anthropological evidence will support this. Fun fact of day!! Thus, we have alwsys been fascinated with Mars. It’s our old house!!!! :)))
I too am scared of old people. I have been since I was little. One of my grandfather’s friends induced me to tears when I was 6. When my mom (obviously really freaked out) asked me why I was crying all I could say was that old people scared me. It became this huge family joke because this guy was no older than my grandparents who I loved and wasn’t at all scared of. So as an adult (who is still scared of old people) I figure that it’s that old people sort of humanize death and dying for me. I am absolutely not scared of people I know who are elderly, because I know them outside of just their age. But elderly strangers just represent how unkind and frankly humiliating the end of life can be.
I totally get the fear of old people! I suppose it’s less of a fear and more that I feel uncomfortable around them. I don’t know how to talk to them or relate. I’m so horrible I even dread seeing grandparents sometimes because it’s awkward and I don’t know how to act. I’ve always felt bad about this and it’s a bit nice to know I’m not the only one
Well put Brandi! I’m not afraid of old people but I get really anxious when I have to socialize with them. I feel the same about kids- but with kids I fear that they’ll see through me and know that I don’t relate well to them and think I’m a lame adult. I didn’t even know how to relate to kids when I was one..
I don’t see how someone couldn’t have a thing for Harris he was so funny, sweet, and charismatic . I’ve been majorly bumming since Thursday. Scott Aukerman’s CBB today was amazingly beautiful/sad/funny.
Totally agree Kristin. I’ve been hiding my tears at work while I just re-listen to every podcast appearance of his. It really truly helps. His Totally Laime episode was one of the best.
Went back and listened to the Harris Wittels episode of Totally Laime. I loved his interview- he seemed like a really awesome person, funny, sweet and brilliant. He lives on in the work he left behind and it is unbelievably sad that he is gone.
Kulap had me in tears immediately on Who Charted today. My heart really goes out to her. I’m kind of baffled how I keep crying about this guy I never met. I think it is a testament to podcasts and their ability to let us get to know all these beautiful strangers.
Kristin - I am completely on the same page. I’ve been crying for a week and I never even knew him. It has been a bit unnerving.
I definitely had a major crush on him (actually how I found Totally Laime!) and his episodes of CBB made me laugh harder than most anything. I’ve come to realize that even though I never knew him, I kind of feel like I did and he brought a lot happiness to my life. Which is honestly amazing. I’m glad that his comedy and personality can live through his death. My heart hurts for his loss and everyone who loved him.
The listener with the keyed car did not come off sounding very cool. You damage a person’s car and then prioritize your yoga class over making amends and you leave your dogs unattended in the car for long periods of time? Chalk the keying up to karma and let it go.
Right on.
That’s what I said! Totally agree!!!
Agree with everyone else about the keyed car owner. The keyer should have left a trashbag on the hood with a note that says, “The puppies looked like they missed their owner, so I did the best I could.”
I’m with Elizabeth. I’m not afraid of old people in the sense of I’m not afraid they’re going to hunt me down and kill me, but being around old people who have diseases or who are very frail make me uneasy, as do hospitals. I think it’s just part of starting to notice your own mortality but it always gives me a really uneasy feeling.
When I heard the Pope thing about the Martians, I think it refers to how Pope Francis said that if Martians asked to be baptized he would baptize them. Sort of like, “I wouldn’t turn anyone away from the Church based on race or circumstance”. I think it was just supposed to be meant as “be accepting of everyone even people you don’t know” but in a funny way. But it apparently caused quite a stir for some conservative Catholics who still don’t believe in evolution.
Love you Andy, but Keebler/ Kellogg’s and a second company in Canada make Girl Scout cookies.
Actually it’s little brownie bakers which existed as a sole bakery long before it was bought by Keebler. It’s like Unilever owning just about every company including Ben & Jerrys. Got milk!!! Sadly I can’t overindulge till March 6th here in Hawaii.
Girl Scout Cookies USED to be made by Girls Scouts and their mothers in their kitchens, and then sold door to door. However, that was the old days, Andy. These girl scouts are now too busy with homework, sports, clubs, and other college resume building activities ;). I kid…ish. I only know this because we were looking up some cookie history earlier in the “season” because I found out that some cookies are different based on the region they’re sold in.
Shit Eating Grin is really a gross phrase. I just picture someone with poo smeared on their face. I always have heard “shit faced grin” which I assumed was just based on someone being drunk.
Love that I get to start my week with you two :).
Shit eating grin took on a new meaning for us when I our dog started eating her frozen poop…
she comes running back into the house like she found a prize or something. We really need to do something about it, so gross…
Oh Becca…no kidding. Yikes! Yummy breath follows I’m sure!
Wow, everything is more expensive in Cali. Girl Scout cookies are only $3.75 a box in Wisconsin
I was going to say the same thing. They are $4 box in Iowa. I thought they were the same across the board.. odd
$5 In Hawaii for many years and it sucks!! Plus they are smaller boxes. But gotta love a thin mint with ice cold #tbash milk!!!
Last year I made a chocolate cheesecake using Thin Mints for the crust. It was perfection
However Samoas (called Caramel DeLites here…) are the greatest!
Oh my God, I was laughing so hard at the Girl Scout cookie shame-spiral confessional! Sometimes, a lady just needs some quality time with her cookie friends. I’ve totally been there, Elizabeth, and I’m sure I’ll be there again.
I just went to a friend’s birthday party over the weekend and someone had given a box of every kind of girl scout cookie they make as a present. I REALLY wanted to rip in and eat them all. I might have a slight addiction to sugar.
haha
Glad I’m not the only one!
Also, a few months ago, Pope Francis did say that if little green Martian type aliens appeared on the planet (and he did use that description) and they wanted to be baptized into Catholicism, that they would be baptized. I think it was supposed to be a message about inclusion but it was still very weird.
I just made my first Amazon purchase through your site. It was super easy! It was the Office Mac Download. Pretty boring but I’ll work on livening it up 😉
Thank you Coco!
Hey Elizabeth and Andy,
Maybe the person that had their car keyed was because of her leaving the dogs in the car…. maybe they were angry about the poor doggies.
So there’s a “Senior Living Center” across from us that invites children to have a safe indoor trick-or-treating experience in their facility every Halloween. I started taking my daughter there, mostly because it’s not outside so it’s not FREEZING COLD, and also because I thought the residents probably enjoy it. This past year was our second time. They set up the residents in chairs or their wheelchairs along the sides of the hallways, and put up signs and arrows and basically have the kids parade up in down in front of the residents, who hand them candy. As my daughter was in line at one of the ‘stations’ waiting her turn for candy, a lady (a resident) asked, “What’s your name?” I thought she was talking to my daughter who was next to me. I tapped her on the shoulder so she’d answer and the sweet old lady looked me right in the eyes and said, “What’s YOUR name?” I answered, “Jason”. She replied with “Joseph? John?” and a bunch of other incorrect names before asking, “It’s not Joshua?” I said no, and she said, “It’s Joshua?” At that point I just said, “close enough” and tried to move on. A lady around my age was sitting 2 chairs down and saw my discomfort and says, “Oh, that’s my mom, she just thinks your her son.” WHAT THE HELL? Why would you tell me that? Nothing else - no help at all with what I’m supposed to say or do next. Did I just cause this woman unmeasurable grief by making her think her dead son had come back to see her then left again? Does she think EVERY male is her son and then she forgets 15 seconds later? I felt SO BAD for this lady and her way-too-casual daughter. If I’d had any idea what I could have told her to make her feel better I would have, but I just left feeling horrible.
TL; DR - I totally get the ‘afraid of old people’ thing.
I also work data entry for a healthcare provider, processing assessments and nursing home visits. I’ve cried at work twice so far in 3 months.
They are still amazing, though. At said Halloween event, we were walking down the hallway to leave, and there’s 3 chairs, 2 residents, and an employee. The employee has the giant bag of fun sized hershey’s, and is handing it to the resident next to her, and telling her to hand it down to the other resident too so they both can pass out candy to the kids. The second resident has a HUGE pile of wrappers on the floor under her and is scarfing down every peanut butter cup and chocolate bar she gets her hands on. The middle resident finally notices what’s going on and says, “Come on (name), you’re not supposed to be eating them!” Which causes her to grin and double down on her eating. Made me so happy.
Careful who you tell about throwing out the Girl Scout cookies. I heard from a GS leader that Colorado has a cookie shortage.

Like Sarah said, they used to be made by the mothers of the girl scouts but now it’s contracted out to several different bakeries.
