Decent guys are rejecting ‘masculinity’ because domination has been an key part ‘being a man.’ However, it’s not easy to reject being oppressive while trying to maintain gravitas or assertiveness. I’m way less concerned that some women are wishing their dates were more confident than I am with the continued oppressive bullshit that is part of ‘being a man.’ If you need an example, just check out: http://mothertheresaslaw.tumblr.com/
“mother theresa’s law: any youtube video featuring a woman, about a woman, or narrated by a woman’s voice with more than ten comments will have misogynistic or creepy gendered comments. the only consistent exception to this rule is mother theresa, hence the name.”
Obviously there is a way to be self-assured without being a misogynist. But, it’s not simply a matter of saying, “Oh, this is what it now means to be a man who respects gender equality.” I was raised with “faggot” as the highest insult. Calling someone a “girl” - including women - continues to be an insult. I’m actively fighting against that and it’s fucking hard to figure out what it actually means to ‘be a man,’
Not that I necessarily blame him, exactly (he was asked a direct question, after all), but was anyone else surprised that Greg Behrendt was so cavalier about publicly announcing where so many Los Angeles music celebrities send their kids to school? Or, is that kind of thinking just utterly paranoid?
Wait until your 40s. You won’t give a toss about any of this pussy/manly shit.
Doug, it would be nice to think so, but Adam Carolla sold millions of copies on just that subject!
Elizabeth and Andy,
This is one of the best interviews I’ve ever heard on your show. Thank you for having Greg on, and for calling things out that need to be talked about. Thank you for stating what’s real, which is there are a lot of men out there who are punk ass pussies. This has nothing to do with sexuality, sexism, or misogyny, but it has everything to do with manners.
Elizabeth, I love what you said about nurturing the thing that loves you back. You were speaking the truth, and good on you for recognizing the shift. I think I’ve found a new mantra!
Very truly yours,
Leigh
