As always- love Totally Mommy. Would like to hear the 20 minutes of the original interview even if it is cut off.
Random question for Elizabeth not related to this episode. You posted a link to a website where you had all of your baby “stuff” recommendations. I looked through about 20 episodes and can’t find it. Can you repost the link?
Oh the four month sleep regression! We hit it hard when my son was that age. He had been sleeping 7-8 hour stretches, and then suddenly it was back up 3-4 times at night to breastfeed. Over the next several months it got better, got worse, but never got back to how good it was when he was 3 months old. Finally when he was 9 months old I read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and WOW I wish I’d read it so much sooner. It gave me the knowledge to make educated sleep decisions as far as his schedule, how long to leave him to self soothe, how to lengthen naps, etc. I could not recommend it more. Over 3 days, pushing his bedtime forward and allowing him time to fuss instead of rushing in at the first peep, he was sleeping from 7 to 6am. Now at 19 months, he sleeps from 7:30 to 6:30 and takes a two hour nap during the day. He’s an awesome sleeper. I tell him Night Night and he lays down in his crib. It’s INSANE to step back into my shoes over a year ago to think this would even be possible. Weissbluth gets a bad rap for “extinction” method, but for us, it was the schedule that was key.
Anyway, best of luck, it IS possible, but just like learning to walk, talk etc., babies really do need guidance on learning how to sleep soundly. In the meantime, I hope you can get a nice long restorative sleep soon!
Oh, man. Sleep seems to be one of the biggest issues of the first year. For a really long time, I was totally against sleep training, and my little man slept really well with just a gentle night time routine. However, we went through a really bad regression around 7 months. I was near my wits end and for my own sanity, my husband and I did some sleep training. We used a modified Ferber method and it has made an amazing difference. Now, we’re all getting a decent amount of sleep, and my baby and I are still just as attached as we have ever been.
If you want to sleep train, find a method you feel comfortable with and try to time it for when the baby isn’t teething or going through a Wonder Week. I am a firm believer that mom is a person too and deserves to be taken care of just as much as everyone else in the family.
Here’s my good, bad, and funny:
Good- my baby, Wyatt, is eating more and more solids. He loves peaches and will crawl to the counter where we keep our fruit, pull up, and grab one to eat. He also likes to offer me a bite, which is so sweet.
Bad- Wyatt will get up at 5 am about once a week and has trouble getting himself back to sleep. I hold off on getting him out of his room until at least 6 am to discourage the habit, but still, losing that hour of precious sleep is hard.
Funny- Wyatt’s hair is getting long and crazy, and he has a mullet going on. I really don’t want to cut his hair for awhile (he’s only ten months), so he’s sporting the hipster mullet look for awhile.
Regarding your bad, if my son starts to wake up before 6, I turn off the baby monitor and set my alarm for 6. Hopefully the 5am wakeups are short lived for you, they are rough!
Would love it if you had a guest on who is a single parent! A lot of the writer-inners questions seem to get handled from the perspective of a 2-parent household, but I think a single parent’s perspective would be really helpful! Great podcasts, as always 🙂
You mentioned the fear of Baby Oprah getting the allergies that you have. I have a 7 month old, and my husband has allergies to…most things in nature: dust, trees, grass, pollen, etc. I talked to my doc about this same fear when I was pregnant, and she had actually done some research and suggested incorporating probiotics into his feedings. It is in powder form. So I buy that and put the suggested serving amount in his milk or solids. It doesn’t seem to cause him any issues, and I hope it helps him in the long run with having no or very little allergies!
Love your podcasts! My friend turned me onto your shows when i got my first smart phone, right after I gave birth to my son, so it has been really fun going through a lot of the same things as you, and around the same time. Thank you!!
