Episode 43
Good/Bad/Funnies (New friends! Clapping and waving!/Teething! The never-ending laundry!/ Smell my finger! Let’s finish this book!) before answering listener questions about how to break up with a new mommy friend, how to decide what sort of school to send your child to, when/how/why to sex? and lastly, a big question about managing the new overwhelming and existential fears that come along with motherhood. Enjoy!

Boy did the question about fears that come along with motherhood resonate with me. I am an older mother so I elected to get the Harmony test for genetic abnormalities around the end of my first trimester and I remember thinking to myself that once I heard that everything was okay genetically, I could just relax and enjoy the rest of the ride. Man, was I wrong! There always seems to be something to worry about- will my baby be hurt during birth (I chose to deliver with a midwife in a birth center, and got some pushback about this from my mother who succeeded in planting some fears in me around this choice)? Am I doing everything I can to prevent SIDS? Will I remember how to do CPR correctly if I need to do it? Don’t even get me started about things to worry about during childhood and adolescence! And it won’t even end at adulthood…I remember seeing the video that the mother of one of the journalists taken hostage by ISIS released, begging for them to spare her son, and it made me physically sick. This would have bothered me before I became a parent but now it is emotionally overwhelming. Having said that, for me, dealing with the fear is absolutely worth the pure joy I get from my little guy. I try to not allow the fear to take over, and to just enjoy every minute we get together.
On a lighter note, it is so funny that both Elizabeth and Alexis hate laundry- I love it! We live in an apartment complex with shared laundry facilities so I have to leave the apartment to do it and, aside from the gym and showering, laundry time is really my only time to myself. I bring my phone, listen to podcasts, and happily fold away. Incidentally, this has also made going to the gym more enjoyable too!
I work at an education publishing company, similar to McGraw Hill type products, that’s located in SoCal and may be able to donate our damaged or out of print products to the event you mentioned on the podcast! Could you please reply/send me additional information? Thank you! Jane

Kudos to you Elizabeth for reading so much to Teddy! All I wanted in the world growing up was a stack of books and someone to read to me. It was simple, cheap (we always got a ton from the library), and it was hours of entertainment. I look forward to doing that with our kid soon.
Are people still adding their good/bad/funnies on here anymore? Oh well, here goes.
Good: I bought two twin size foam pads to put on our bed to sleep on as a last resort to my aching back and hips from pregnancy, and it worked! I’m so excited! I’m surrounded by pillows but I don’t care!
Bad: I’m so stinking hot all the time! I use two, yes two fans at work when everyone else is using portable heaters. I haven’t stopped using my Summer maternity clothes because of it. Kinda praying for colder weather…
Funny: I attended an exercise class with a bunch of friends and I was the only prego. Let’s just say on more than one occasion I had a hard time getting back up after squats and lunges. Everyone was nice about it though so it was a little less embarrassing.
To anyone who wants to be awesome and donate to Hannah’s book drive that I mentioned for homeless kids on this podcast, the address is:
