Episode 77
Elizabeth’s super smarty pants Doctor friend, anesthesiologist and mama to a five month old cherub is here! ALEX CONRAD comes on and discusses going back to work and balancing it all before we dive into our good/bad/funnies (Sweetie pie bedtime routines! Chicken tenders save the day! The hassle of pumping! Bathtub wipeout! Eating solids! New words!) before giving our unqualified advice to listener questions about how to deal with unsafe grandparents, and how to handle letting your coworkers know about your pregnancy if you are suffering from morning sickness and it’s affecting your work. Enjoy!

I was an office worker when pregnant the first two times, and I was so sick there was no hiding it. I had to travel a lot (in state, so driving) for my job and ended up telling the co-workers I was traveling with at 5 weeks. It seemed ridiculous, but there was no hiding how sick I was on a road trip. (They let me lay down in the backseat and try to sleep away the driving!)
After I told them I got super nervous word would get around to my bosses and was anxious they wouldn’t appreciate hearing through the grapevine instead of from me directly, so I set up a meeting to tell them at 6 weeks! I felt like such an idiot, because who puts themselves on the mommy track at 6 weeks pregnant?? My job was super family friendly, so there wasn’t really a mommy track, and everything was great, but I still felt a little foolish for not being able to hide it longer. It was totally fine, though. If it happens, it happens. I was way less worried when going through the same thing with pregnancy #2.
The worst, honestly, was pregnancy #3 when I’d become a stay-at-home-mom and my two little bosses had zero pity on me in my barfing state.
hahaha, man, those little bosses sound harsh! Great feedback, thanks Jesabes
I loved this week’s podcast! I really enjoyed Alex’s perspective of being a working mom AND a pumper! I was right there, I exclusively pumped for 10 months, including on an airplane with my boss! Yikes. I feel her pain- but she is doing awesome!
I’m not a big fan of waiting to tell people at work (at least *some* people). I’ve miscarried twice. Both times it happened AT WORK. The first time, 2 of my closest co-workers knew I was pregnant, and there’s no way I would have made it through that situation without them knowing and helping me. The 2nd time, I thought I’d keep the pregnancy to myself, and once again miscarried. It was so much worse having to say, “Hey I’m pregnant and having a miscarriage Right Now”, with them not knowing I was even pregnant to begin with.
There’s no right or wrong way to do things- cross that bridge when you get to it, but I just wanted to share another perspective.
The story of Baby Opes hitting her head in the bath reminds me of our toddlers recent injury story. Our son is two and a half and recently got his first legit skinned knee and for my husband is was like a rite of passage. He was borderline proud! My reaction differed in that I headed straight to Target and got an assortment of first aid sprays, neosporin, and bandages. Basically preparing for a war or something. But hey, I figure with one boy and another on the way I should be building up our first aid supplies
This one left us with a cliffhanger for Alex’s full skin regime! I am looking to really start some great habits and am so curious what her nighttime routine is (she shared the morning routine on the episode). Thanks!
ps LOVE the podcast!
Oops! Realized this was talked about on Episode 78 with Natalie Smyka
Still would love to know the regime!
